Asia and the Pacific are home to more than half of the world’s population and hold significant geostrategic importance due to their location, geography, technological innovation, economic strength, and potential for conflict. The region’s rapid industrialisation and population growth have led to environmental challenges such as pollution, deforestation, and climate change. Addressing these issues requires concerted efforts from both regional and global stakeholders. The Asia-Pacific region’s economic, demographic, strategic, and cultural significance make it a vital player in shaping global affairs and driving worldwide progress.
In this complex context, the 2026 PFD Regional Meeting will foster “Regional Partnerships for Shared Prosperity”, focused on “Scaling Green Transformation and Climate Resilience in Asia and the Pacific”, recognising climate challenges and showing how strengthening community trust and ensuring development investments, especially Global Gateway initiatives, can deliver benefits to communities across Asia and the Pacific.
The theme underscores the need for deeper cooperation in one of the world’s most dynamic yet diverse regions. By framing prosperity as a collective endeavour rather than a competition, this theme highlights the importance of inclusivity, resilience, and solidarity. The PFD Regional Meeting for Asia and the Pacific seeks to serve as a meaningful platform for CSO and LA stakeholders, as well as representatives of EU institutions and Member States, to take stock and plan towards strengthened cooperation between the Asia Pacific (ASPAC) region and the EU in the context of confronting climate and environmental challenges.
Climate and environment challenges affect all sectors and all populations, but vulnerable communities, such as women and girls, youth, persons with disabilities, and Indigenous peoples, suffer negative impacts in greater proportions. There are Indigenous practices and knowledge that we can learn from in terms of protection and conservation of the environment, which will be highlighted in the conversations.
